The Swiss Music Awards, the biggest music prizes in Switzerland, serve to promote the national music scene and to present its cultural diversity. It all began in the Kaufleuten in Zurich in 2008. On 10 February 2017, the Swiss Music Awards will celebrate their tenth anniversary.
As a hub for music-makers, professionals, and personalities from the worlds of politics, society and the media, in just a few years the Swiss Music Awards have evolved into the music prizes with the broadest appeal and greatest impact in the country.
The SMAs will celebrate their ten-year anniversary in 2017, and their recognition curve is rising fast. With the change of venue to Zurich’s Hallenstadion, they’re now very much a public event.
The SMAs' new organiser is the agency Claim Event AG. The founder and managing director of Claim Event is Oliver Rosa, who as executive producer has been responsible for the organisation, marketing, and strategic development of the event since its inception in 2008.
In future, awards will be given by the association Press Play (comprising IFPI Schweiz, SUISA, SWISSPERFORM, SMPA and a new member SIG). As the official giver of the awards, the association Press Play is responsible for drawing up the rules and (in conjunction with GfK Entertainment AG) for counting the votes for the awards ceremony.
Nomination and selection of Swiss Music Award prizewinners are officially regulated by Press Play. The rules were developed in collaboration with GfK Entertainment AG and can be seen here.
As a national music award, the SMAs build bridges between German-speaking Switzerland and the French-speaking parts of the country in the West. For this reason, the category ’Best Act Romandie’ (French-speaking Switzerland) was introduced in 2013. A special event for this category takes place in the run-up to the Swiss Music Awards every year. Experience a rich variety of showcases and the impressive diversity of the music scene in French-speaking western Switzerland. The first Swiss Music Award will be presented to the winner in the category 'Best Act Romandie' live at a special event in Lausanne and will be celebrated again in style at the SMAs in Zurich on 9 February, 2018.
The Best Act Romandie is supported by the Swiss institute for the promotion of culture, Pro Helvetia.
